FINE ART
Elevated and environmentally sound original artwork for hotels, businesses, and large spaces.
Below are examples of Opala Art as a large format statement piece. Customizations and commissions available to fit your vision and space.
"KIERAN SAYS"
This 24x30" original is made entirely of found objects from Kaua'i beaches. All material are used in the exact condition as they were discovered; no added or removed color, and no cutting, shaving, or manipulating of the medium.
"TRICKLES CAUSE FLOODS"
After months of planning and collecting, the grand total of 884 pieces of this washed up material make up this 30x40" work.
Streams of naturally found blue and green can be seen both horizontally and vertically, depending on how you frame the handpainted canvas.
"DEEP MAUKA"
This 20x60" work draws from scenes around the artist- pali full of ridges and texture, shadow and light. Though plastic pollution is a problem in the ocean, this piece speaks to a broader message of caring for all of earth.
All material is integrated exactly as it was found in color, shape, and size. Included in this piece are many unknown objects but some identifiable ones as well, including hagfish traps, bottle caps, pens, toy wheels, and combs.
"COLORS OF THE SEA"
After completing some smaller versions of this piece, this 24x30" handpainted canvas proudly displays an array of different hues, textures, shapes, and sizes that embody the colors of the ocean. All materials are found exactly as they are seen; tediously sorted, organized, and placed for the perfect color blending that makes up this large and tranquil scene.
"TIED UP"
The scraps of washed up net and rope seen in this 18x18" piece took many months just to collect. Nestled between the weaves are pieces of plastic collected by Kauaʻi volunteers.
None of the lengths of the rope material have been altered or cut, leaving it to the artist's intention and mastery to find ways to integrate all of the different sizes, shapes, and textures into one succinct piece.
"PERPETUAL STATE OF BLOOM"
Intricately arranged typography and design made of found ocean plastic, nets, and ropes removed from Kaua’i beaches on 36x48" cotton canvas.
This phrase is borrowed from a line in one of writer Beau Flemister’s Surfing articles about the North Shore of Oahu. As a surfer and a writer, I have always been inspired by Flemister’s work- how his prose is conversational and inviting, but also thoughtful and intentional. I always hoped to somehow reflect that balance in something I create, whether with words or images.
Finding the “right” shaped ocean plastic to fit an image is always difficult, but finding the right shapes, curves, and edges to form letters of a font is a true challenge!
